Teamsters Boot Camp Shapes Organizers of the Future

Bob Kokx works at Coca-Cola as a lab tech in quality assurance. He also lives in a state where unemployment stands at 15.2 percent and workers have faced hard times. Kokx sat down with Teamster Magazine to share why he believes in the value of organizing and what his thoughts are on the future of labor.

"I'm a second generation Teamster and I have enjoyed the benefits our contract has given us. Why I've been a steward and on the board is because it was a chance to give back.

The rougher times are, the more we need to be in a union. I get kind of emotional when I hear people cut the union down. I hope to learn here how I can help other people join our union.

I've got a pension, health care and I'm making a good wage. It's definitely a give and take, but the company should pay what they can afford to pay. They take care of you, and you take care of them.

However, a lot is to the advantage of the employer right now. People without the information or history of unions are scared to join. The Employee Free Choice Act will help alleviate that.

As a union, we need to educate the younger work force coming in. Some of them take things for granted because they don't know how hard we've worked to get the benefits that we have. If that goes on, we will lose membership.

I'm glad to be here learning more about how to help our great union. I encourage others to do the same."
